Academic Honesty

Referencing

Students are required to acknowledge the sources of the information included in their assignments. Plagiarism, using other people’s work without credit, or in biblical terms, stealing, is viewed very seriously. There are many areas of common knowledge that do not need to be referenced; however, when students draw on somebody else’s research or ideas or use another person’s wording, this must be acknowledged. Students are required to sign a statement with reference to all written work submitted, certifying that the work is their own, that all sources have been acknowledged and that the content has not been previously submitted for assessment to Tabor Victoria or elsewhere. Where a marker detects plagiarism, he/she will inform the student in writing of the severity of this academic offence and ensure that the student understands the nature of the problem and its implications. Normally, a fail grade will result. The student may be granted permission to repeat and resubmit the work, in accordance with resubmission guidelines, but will not be able to score more than a Pass for the resubmission. Detailed guidelines on assignment style, including the referencing conventions to be used, are provided in the Assigment Style Guide.

Further information on plaigiarism is given by the Dean at the Orientation session. His presentation is found here.
