John has a PhD from the University of Cambridge (on "Karl Barth's Theology of Joy"). John has also studied history, philosophy and education since his undergraduate studies in engineering and theology.
Since ordination in the Anglican Church, John has served as Vicar of Collarenebri (NW NSW) and Principal of the Church Army College of Evangelism in Sydney. He maintains a regular connection with the church, through teaching and leadership. He and Wendy are active members of the church near their home:the Mullum Mullum Anglican Parish, where Wendy is the Children's and Family Ministries Coordinator. John has previously connected his ministry skills to ministries as diverse as Darlinghurst [Kings Cross] and Redfern in inner Sydney and Roseville East and Denistone East/Marsfield [now Macquarie Anglican] in suburban Sydney. Whilst in England John and Wendy were active in the Parish of All Saints' Cottenham (Diocese of Ely) and John assisted with services in Selwyn College Chapel.
In theological education, John has taught at many theological colleges, from Pentecostal to denominational, in both England and Australia. He is a Member of the Australian College of Theology and has been their Moderator in Theology since 2005. He is regularly involved in doctoral supervisor and marking across a range of institutions, and has been moderator (external benchmarker) for the Sydney College of Divinity. John is the Victorian representative on the Council of ANZATS (the Australian and New Zealand Association of Theological Schools).
As well as being a member of Tabor Victoria's Academic Board, and Chair of its Learning and Teaching Committee, John is a member of the Academic Board of both Tabor College Tasmania and Alphacrucis College, as well as being a Board Member of Tintern Schools.
John passionately believes that theology, ethics and spirituality are inextricably linked, and that all are practical arts worthy of development for life and ministry. See Why being a Christian thinker is the best job in the world
John has publications and conference papers to his credit in the areas of the theology of joy, trinitarian theology, the thought of Karl Barth, online adult education, and the Internet and ministry. He has an ongoing interest in the book of Lamentations, the writings of Julian of Norwich, and the nature of mission at social margins. Much of his recent thought was devoted to developing Tabor Victoria as the best possible learning place that it can be.
Wendy and John have four daughters, from the end of 2010 all post high school. It is often commented that one of God's great blessings is how much they take after their mother, in looks especially....
John is the only member of his family committed to pogonotrophy. Wendy is, however, when the need arises, a competent and committed pogonotomist (see also previous link).
John has a great face for radio, and if you are interested, you can listen to him speak of miracles and joy here
A discussion between John, Revd Dr David Millikan and host John Cleary of ABC Radio's Sunday Nights on the topic of "Evangelical Therapies" can be found here
In June 2011, John joined with friends Lynn Moresi and Tania Harris to speak about faith and experience, with a focus on Pentecostal churches. Listen here
John adds: Here is one of my favourite recent items, and a reminder to me of why I like being Anglican (and have great respect for the current Archbishop of Canterbury).
Post Tabor, John intends to continue in pastoral ministry and to contribute to theological education as opportunity arises.
